Helmet Waiver
|
Helmet Waiver and Position Statement The use of helmets in pole vaulting is currently under investigation. Currently no specific helmet for pole vaulting exists. However, some helmets may offer an extra measure of safety in pole vaulting. Several brands of hockey and skating helmets seem to offer excellent protection to the sides and back of the head area. These helmets are light-weight, have foam inner-liners, a smooth hard plastic outer-shell that conforms to the shape of the head, and a adjustable chin strap. A helmet should be considered a personal piece of equipment which the vaulter should supply for him or her self. It is important to note that even with large landing pads, and additional padding of hard surfaces the planting box area still remains a hazardous area for potential injury. Perhaps most important of all, the helmet should never be a substitute for safe equipment or sound technique. Some studies in other sports seem to indicate that the use of a helmet gives the participant a false sense of security or well being. Other studies seem to indicate that a helmet can be somewhat distracting to the user. The decision to use a helmet should be that of the athlete and his or her parents. Since no such thing as a pole vault specific helmet exists; the wearing of a helmet can only be recommended. I have read and understand the above statement.
